Name:
Clifford Smith
Birthday:
1st February 1977
Location:
Mosta,
Malta (Europe)
Musical Background:
He grabbed his first guitar at the late age of 17, however he quickly started
experimenting and settled that he wanted to focus on bass guitar. After a few
"formal" lessons he joined his first band with some friends from Sixth Form but
the band remained unnamed and never actually performed to an audience. However
he gained a lot of experience from this adventure as the other band-members
where very skilled.
At the time he was forming his roots listening to Queen and eventually to
Metallica... However he soon started appreciating the moods provided by Doom
Metal, especially the likes of Anathema, My Dying Bride, Candlemass and in
particular, Paradise Lost.
Cliff then moved on forming another band with old school-mate Shawn Abela, what
later became "Corkskrew". Even though the musical style was far from his normal
agenda, it was still a very challenging feat to create original, catchy tunes.
Having recorded 2 albums with the band, it brought him further experience and
discipline in his playing skills.
During his 9 year period with Corkskrew he also had the opportunity to play with
long-time friends, Shaun Grech and Sergio Bellizzi (ex-Orbus Vitae) as the band
"Syrup". However he had to stop in order to concentrate on his commitments with
Corkskrew. He eventually quit the band for personal reasons.
Cliff decided he wanted a rockier edge and soon joined forces with another band
- "Pitch99". The style was more into American Rock but with many different
edges! Cliff could try out some of the ideas he had been brewing and the final
result was quite an exciting blending of musical styles.
In the meantime he was offered to join "Bitterside". Hence he soon had to take a
difficult decision as his work schedules and rehearsal sessions began
conflicting. The move to "Bitterside" was unexpected in a way but it opened
other doors.
With "Bitterside" he recorded yet another album, "Underrated". Unfortunately due
to conflicting opinions and other commitments, he decided to take a short break
and look for band which played the music that was more at his heart...
...and this is where "Rising Sunset" come in!!!
